user Orientation - Oculab//High-level Perception lab, Ucsc

Oct 2015 - June 2017

The High-Level Perception Lab is based out of the Cognitive Science research department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Within this department, we started the Oculab, which was the first lab in the department to perform research using Virtual Reality. We had a Oculus DK2 and a Leap Motion, cutting edge tech for the time! Using Unity3D and C#, we would develop experiences focusing on user perception.

The experiment I led there, titled “Orientation”, inspected how users perceived screens while their body was oriented at different angles. While tilted, they were instructed to rotate a screen in the virtual environment that was playing a movie. Different subjects were placed in either an all black environment, or a room with visual cues, such as a couch and a plant. We discovered that users in the all black environment would tend to rotate the video screen to an extreme amount to whatever was comfortable for them in their position, while the “living room” environment subjects would take the environmental cues around them into account and would not rotate the screen as freely.

My Responsibilities Included:

  • Development of Unity3D experiences for Oculus DK2, HTC Vive, Leap Motion, using C#

  • Management of all Research Assistants (Hour allocation)

  • Establishment of Oculab
